Fountain of Your Youth

Fountain of Your Youth

2017

Plastic pony beads, 3D printed plastic auger and gears, motor, plastic, fabric, optic yellow tennis ball felt, pool noodles, nylon mesh, crepe shoe rubber, wood.

55 in x 22 in x 22 in

A kinetic sculpture automotan robot "fountain" that churns up plastic pony beads. These are the pound/pony trade beads used in girls' "protective style" braided hairstyles, as seen on the tennis champ Williams sisters, also used to purchase Manhattan from Indigenous people in the legendary history. This sculpture circulates the beads like money and water, and is also designed to do some institutional nuisance-making of scattering about 1 in 10 beads on the floor, engaging curators and institutional staff in the process of care and clean up as a tribute to the Black Girl Magic Protective Style Ritual. It's a job creator. :)
